I can never forget the importance of the rear-view mirror while driving, due to an intriguing incident that happened to me some time back. I was pulling out my car from the parking area onto the drive way of our apartment. There were a few pillars I was trying to avoid and once I was into the driveway, slowly started proceeding to the gate when I heard a loud scraping noise. I had scraped the left tail - bumper of the car onto a pillar. In my excitement to get onto the road, I had forgotten to check my rear - view mirror and hence the crash.
I think one of the most important things about driving in India with its lawless traffic and congestion, is a sense of which vehicle is behind and beside you, for which a rear - view is essential at all times. Contrary to this, would be to only look behind and keep driving which would prove fatal.
I remember as a kid, traveling with my dad on the scooter. We were planning to start off carecell at our home, so we ventured out in the night to buy a few plastic chairs. After buying 6 chairs, we managed to secure them to the tail part of the scooter with a rope and then I had to sit in the reverse direction on the pillion seat... my back to the rider and my body facing the road behind me and also holding the chairs. It was a scary experience as I had no clue of where I was going. Could see all the vehicles behind me, honking frantically each time we slowed down.
Our past experiences serve as a great indicator as to how we can live our lives a little more better in the present. Remembering our former mistakes help us not to repeat them again. A rear - view mirror of our past also reminds us of where we came from, keeping us always grounded and looking heaven-wards for help each time. On the contrary, many of us are guilty of only looking at the past and dwelling on all those memories. Some years back I used to only dwell on my past, a few glorious moments which I wanted to always relive again. I remembered all the mistakes which I had committed and also felt guilty about them.
This pulled me down emotionally and I realized that I was unable to live my present effectively. I allowed the skeletons of my past affect my present which I realised would eventually spoil my future. I had to let go of my past and surrender this aspect of my life to God asking Him to wipe away the regrets of yesterday but preserve the wonderful memories which would encourage me in the present and the future.
As I turn 20 today, I want to look back at all my blessings... my family, friends (past & present), achievements, appreciations, the love and respect I was showered with, etc. Although those were some amazing memories, I look forward with greater anticipation at what God still has in store for me.
I wanna encourage you to do the same... ask God to take away the burden of the past so that you can enjoy the present and help determine your better tomorrow. Remember that having a rear - view mirror is good but let it not become your only view.
Thank you for all the love that you've showered on me and for being a reader of AMPS.
God Bless You.
"I'm gonna live for today, I'm gonna follow in your way I'm gonna let my little light shine like there's no tomorrow. I won't worry about the past, I know my future is intact So I'll choose to live my life one way, I'm gonna live it for today"
